Scheherazade 03:26
A long time ago in a black sedan Was a crooked face on a crooked man He brought a bundle back home from overseas In the deepest part of the deepest South Was circus tent and a restless town Outside the name on the sign that read “TONIGHT SCHEHERAZADE” Scheherazade Scheherazade You’re attractive as a lightning rod Scheherazade Scheherazade You’re a blessing and a curse from God Everybody likes a little taste of poison The air was heavy and thick People sitting on the edge of their seats They were looking for S-E-X - man, you could melt from the body heat Then Tom Thumb plays a bugle and drum And says everybody “Here she comes” Scheherazade Scheherazade You’re attractive as a lightning rod Scheherazade Scheherazade You’re a blessing and a curse from God Everybody likes a little taste of poison They were laying in a pile of lust Swimming in a river of sweat She took their money and laughed This was a lesson they would never forget For every one of the seven vails you’ve got to pay a price Scheherazade Scheherazade You’re attractive as a lightning rod Scheherazade Scheherazade You’re a blessing and a curse from God Everybody likes a little taste of poison

Here she comes again Sharp as a needle and she’s getting underneath your skin She’s the sun up in the sky And she’ll burn you quick as a wink with her evil eyes But who’s going to be the one to get their way? The girl most likely She’s a holiday A Cinderella shrink-wrapped underneath your Christmas tree She’s a bad, bad girl But it’s the good kind of bad and that’ll take her all around the world Who’s going to be the one to get their way? The girl most likely She’s got me wrapped around her little finger But I’ll only hang around so long Then she goes away And you knew that she would because the story always ends that way There’s a fine, fine line That she makes you walk, but crosses every time Who’s going to be the one to get their way? The girl most likely

It starts to rain She waves goodbye Water-colored tears falling from her eyes Some things don’t change It’s over before it starts Some things don’t change She leaves a graveyard of broken hearts Whenever baby plays games She plays them with me. She calls at night She knows I’m alone Says she drank too much and she can’t drive home Some things don’t change Every time a good time starts Some things don’t change She leaves a junkyard of broken parts Whenever baby plays games She plays them with me And I always let her win I know she’s only going to cheat again Baby plays games right or wrong Baby plays games all night long This is my last chance to tell her how I feel Then she says, ”I’ll tell you honey, it ain’t no big deal” Some things don’t change She takes me for the fool I am Some things don’t change I fall in line with her master plan Whenever baby plays games She plays them with me

Wake up Go outside and take a look around And don’t be afraid to let your feet touch the ground Just because the sky is turning grey Doesn’t mean you throw the day away Grow your own You’ve got to do it alone You’ll be taken in by the sin that the city breeds You’re so naive you don’t know who to believe Open up your window, let the sun come in You’ve been burned before and you will again Just because somebody let you down Doesn’t mean you burn your house right down to the ground You’ve got to grow your own You’ve got to do it alone You’ll be taken in by the sin that the city breeds You’re so naive you don’t know it’s time to leave Grow your own You’ve got to do it alone Grow Your Own

Your father tried to wise you up and your mother kneeled down to pray I think they got a little mixed up somewhere along the way All you can do is find a little hope you can hang onto All you can do is try to hang on too. Tired of living hand-to-mouth, you always kneel down to pray You find you’ve been praying for a miracle every day All you can do is find a little hope you can hang onto All you can do is try to hang on too. Sometimes you’ll lose your grip and start to slip away Now’s the time to lean back on the memories you’ve been saving for a rainy day All you can do is find a little hope you can hang onto All you can do is try to hang on too.

Backslider 03:18
This is how it begins Underneath a blood-red moon The cycle never ends You hit the road too soon Time flies by so fast you can’t remember where you are The Devil’s in the details Backslider When you were a kid You fell in love with a melody You signed your name in blood so easily Then they sell you just enough rope to hang you by The Devil’s in the details Backslider You lean in for the kill underneath a tobacco sky Now you’re the one waiting for the blood to dry Time flies by so fast you can’t remember who you are The Devil’s in the details Backslider

Up All Night 03:05
I’ve been up all night And I can’t remember my name I’ve been up all night Burning the endless flame Fire used to be my friend Now I’m burning myself again I’ve been up all night And I can’t remember my name I’ve been up all night In the eye of a hurricane I’ve been up all night Riding the worry train When the train’s coming off the track If it goes too far you know you can’t come back I’ve been up all night And I can’t remember my name You’d better learn how to think before you do There’s a million and one trap doors You’re going to fall right through You’ve got to be a little harder now A little bit quicker now A little bit colder now And maybe just a little wicked now I’ve been up all night You used to be my friend Now you’re slipping the shiv In my back again I’ve been up all night And I can’t remember my name You better learn to tell the righteous from the wrong There’s a laundry list of shit to do before we’re gone You’ve got to be a little harder now A little bit quicker now A little bit colder now And maybe just a little wicked now I’ve been up all night And I can’t remember my name I’ve been up all night Burning the endless flame Fire used to be my friend Now I’m burning myself again and again I’ve been up all night And I can’t remember my name

I think I’m all soul’d out No more soul to sell I’m always on one knee Praying to a wishing well Because around the world they all say cash is king It’s all about the silver gold and green I think I’m driving blind I can’t see straight no more I spy from the corner of my eye A line I’ve never crossed before Because around the world they all say cash is king It’s all about the silver gold and green I used to have a time machine I could disappear by playing these silver strings I’m well aware of who and where I am I’m living with it anyway Can you tell me what you pay for a misspent youth I’ll add it up on Judgement Day Because around the world they all say cash is king It’s all about the silver gold and green.

Destination The street they call desire So lonely With a heart that is on fire A house ain’t a home when you’re all alone all the time and he’s out on the road To the gilded palace of sin Where the outcast always fits in Every loser is playing to win Don’t be shy, come on in I watched an angel As she fell from God’s grace Hard living Put the lines across her face For every lost soul that leaves home in search of a dream sometimes will go To the gilded palace of sin Where the outcast always fits in Every loser is playing to win Don’t be shy, come on in

about

GrooveNet/Treblephone Records is proud to announce the release of Palace of Sin, the first release in 31 years by Dallas band The Trees. Songwriter/vocalist Patrick McKanna and guitarist Matt Swaney have created a landmark LP which encapsulates Americana and Power Pop influences, combined with solid, insightful lyrics.

Patrick McKanna has followed his own muse during his entire music career and has steadfastly refused to bow to current styles and influences. His work possesses a timeless quality not tied to fleeting trends; instead, relying on classic songwriting skills and a rich, clear production which well-serves the songs. Matt Swaney’s masterful, melodic guitar parts ensure that the songs will continue to reverberate in your memory long after the album has finished playing.

Palace of Sin is the culmination of three years’ dedicated work which fully delivers on the promise of 1986’s Locomotion Vs. Hittin’ The Brake--- a seminal record in the development of Dallas’ 1980’s Deep Ellum music scene----which contained the local favorite Rail Duty Blues. The band also appeared on the Island Records 1987 release The Sound of Deep Ellum, a musical snapshot of the then-fertile mix of styles and influences existing on the Dallas music scene. The band also appeared on KERA’s Sound Sessions album with a local radio favorite, Before Electricity. [Their musical pedigree goes all the way back to the dawn of punk/new wave---Patrick appearing on a collectible local 45 rarity by the U.S. Mods, and Matt being a member of Dallas punk band The Assassins.]

Proving that stellar songwriting and classic production values never go out of style----Palace of Sin will be an album that is destined to remain on ‘repeat’ on your personal playlist.
